We believe that creative engagement is a part of being a healthy individual and part of building healthy communities. At Maker’s Apron, we want to help make it part of a healthy planet too.
What is Maker’s Apron?
It’s like if the art store and hardware store had a baby, that was a thrift store . . . and we’re trying to save the world!
First the community donates: Tools, Supplies, and Materials for Crafts, Education, Fine Arts, and Home Improvement.
Then we sell them back to the community at very reasonable prices.

We will work with local businesses to capture material waste for up-cycling, diverting it from the waste stream. We have already diverted over 10,000 pounds of paper products which are ready to sell to individuals and schools.
We will work with schools and support agencies to provide hands on work experience.
Humboldt is READY for our own Creative Reuse Center!
There is a NEED. There is STUFF. (So. Much. Stuff.)
We just need the PLACE!

Why Creative Reuse?
Supplies are Expensive
Many folks in Humboldt could use access to more affordable supplies for school and creativity.
As a growing community, it’s important we foster equitable access to the tools for building our fertile minds, warm hearts and comfy homes.
Footprint Matters
Everything shipped in costs resources. Everything wasted costs opportunity. Everything thrown in a landfill is a cost for the next generation.
People Crave
Eco-Creativity
Offering creative reuse classes for kids and adults has a proven track record of success in Humboldt.
Whether workshops are online, at our own Makerspace, or in local schools, activities about those 4R’s are popular programming.
Hi, I’m Kati Texas.
In February of 2020 I was hired to be the new Director of SCRAP Humboldt. I was so excited! The intersection of art, ecology, education, and making sure crayons don’t go to waste was exactly where I wanted to be.
I could tell you the heartbreaking story of how I got my dream job only to run head first into a global pandemic. How the SCRAP USA national network tried so hard to help our local creative reuse center stay open, but in the end it was all just really, really, really unlucky timing …
But I’d rather tell you about the partnerships already in place to get Maker’s Apron up and running!
Key Partnerships
Maker’s Apron has been accepted as a DreamMaker Project of the Ink People!
Through them we have the ability to accept donations, and enjoy a solid foundation of administrative services.
SCRAP USA still loves us, and will give us access to the SCRAP Humboldt social media audience and other contact lists to help rebuild our creative community connections.
Recology is making good use of one of their empty bays by donating storage space to us. We have set aside many fixtures and some tools, even a few tons of newsprint rolls to begin kitting out our new home … as soon as we have one.
Many people who supported SCRAP Humboldt are eager to support a new creative reuse center! We’re building the team right now!
What’s next?
Fundraising, of course!
Many things can be donated, but some expenses are just expensive. We are hoping to raise $3,000 to open up shop, and cover the first few months of operating costs.
Individual donations
Business Sponsorships
Grants for Education and Business Development
We need a home.
Maker’s Apron is looking for a space in Old Town Eureka which will house the retail side as well as our own makerspace.
Maybe there’s even someone out there with a good spot they would offer for free or a discount while we build up stock, sales, and class participation.
Engage!
Our next step is to engage our supportive community. We need to let them know the plan, get them to start putting together their extra crafty supplies, and ask them to kick in time or money while they’re at it.
