We want to live in a world where nothing ends up in a landfill! Here’s some waste diverting options we have found for hard to recycle materials in Humboldt and beyond. More to come.

  • Food Waste

Full Cycle Compost is a Worker-Owned Bicycle-Powered Compost Service in Arcata, CA. They’ll keep your food waste out of the landfill and in our local soil. (For a small/sliding scale fee.)

  • Used/Damaged Bedding & Towels

    • Sequoia Humane Society (or your local animal shelter probably) will accept donations of CLEAN bedding even if it’s worn or damaged. No pillows since they shred too easily, but they will happily take towels and bedding to keep the animals warm. PS Most shelters will also take any kind of pet supplies including open bags of food, pet carriers, and even common medications in their original containers.

  • Markers and Pens (Dixon/Prang/Ticonderoga/Lyra only for now)

    • TerraCycle® and Dixon have partnered to create a free recycling program for Ticonderoga, Prang, and Lyra art supplies and writing instruments. (Crayola used to have a program where they took any kind of marker, but it’s been suspended during the pandemic. Once they start up again, we will begin accepting dead markers at Maker’s Apron.)

  • Lego Bricks Damaged/Not Damaged

    • Lego Replay recycles Lego bricks, and they’ll even pay the shipping. Go to the Replay page to print a shipping label, and your old bricks will either be donated to a kid in need or ground down to be made into new Lego bricks and molds.

  • Used Mattresses/Any Condition

    • Sleepopolis has compiled a guide for how to get recycle your funky old mattress.
